Movie Trailer Roundup
1. Avengers: Endgame (Trailer #2)
I could not possibly be more hyped for this movie. I can’t say that I really understand the ‘Schindler’s List’ style black-and-white with featured red style shooting, but I’m sure that will come to be understood later. Robbie did a great breakdown you can read here.
2. Aladdin (Trailer #3)
Going from one end of the spectrum to the other, this has to be the biggest upcoming release that I just couldn’t care less about. As long as the singing is good I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, though. It stars Will Smith (After Earth), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), Billy Magnussen (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Mena Massoud (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Marwan Kenzari (The Angel), and Nasim Pedrad (SNL). Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, RocknRolla) is directing and co-wrote the script with John August (Big Fish).
3. Longshot (Trailer #2)
This looks charming, but I’m still scared about this getting sort of ruined like a lot of recent comedies by hamfisting political references into jokes. This stars Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road), Seth Rogan (Futureman), Alexander Skarsgard (Hold the Dark), Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings), Randall Park (Ant Man & the Wasp), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) and Bob Odenkirk.Jonathan Levine (50/50) is behind the camera on a Liz Hannah (The Post) and Dan Sterling (The Interview) script.
4. Nona
This looks like a very scary look at a real situation that impacts many immigrants that try to escape shitty situations by coming to the United States. It stars Sulem Calderon (Jungle Cruise), Jesy McKinney and Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns). Michael Polish (Twin Falls Idaho) wrote and directed.
5. Good Boys
Typically speaking, I don’t like movies where kids are the main stars. That said, it’s tough to bet against this production crew. The most notable kid actor is Jacob Tremblay (Room, The Predator) with supporting performances from Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Will Forte (MacGruber) and Retta (Parks and Recreation). Gene Stupnitsky (The Office) is directing and wrote the movie along with Lee Eisenberg (The Office).
6. Booksmart
This is an extremely early call, but I think this is going to be one of the better comedies of the year. If ‘Ladybird’ taught me anything, it’s that Beanie Feldstein (sister of Jonah Hill) is an absolute treasure that is carving her own path as a top tier comedic actress. Her co-star Kaitlyn Dever was great in ‘Detroit’, and Will Forte (MacGruber) and Jason Sudeikis (Hall Pass) are about as good of a supporting group as you can get. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut was written by Susanna Fogel (Life Partners), Emily Halpern (Black-ish), Sarah Haskins (Trophy Wife) and Katie Silberman (Isn’t it Romantic?).
7. The Art of Self Defense
I can’t tell if this is more ‘The Foot Fist Way’ or ‘Cobra-Kai”. Either way, I’m in. This stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Alessandro Nivola (Face/off) and Imogen Poots (Green Room). Riley Stearns (Faults) wrote and directed.
